Everything you need to know

Clear, straightforward answers from our specialist team.

Popular FAQ's

What is included in a service?

Servicing isn’t a generic package especially for prestige vehicles.

We follow manufacturer recommended schedules specific to your BMW, MINI, Mercedes or Porsche, ensuring your car receives exactly what it needs at the right time.

Depending on your vehicle and service interval, this may include oil and filter replacement, comprehensive safety and performance checks, diagnostic scanning, fluid inspections and replacement of scheduled components such as air filters or spark plugs.

Everything is carried out using manufacturer compliant procedures and genuine or OEM equivalent parts with your digital service record updated where applicable.

We’ll always explain what’s included before we start, so you know precisely what your vehicle is receiving.

We offer courtesy cars and bicycles to help you stay mobile while your vehicle is with us in both branches of Huntingdon and Peterborough.

Simply let us know when booking that you’ll need one, and we’ll reserve it for you.  Courtesy vehicles are subject to availability, so we always recommend requesting one as early as possible.

We will run through the simple paperwork, check your driving licence and get you on your way while we take care of your car.

If you prefer to wait, we also have a comfortable reception area with refreshments and Wi-Fi.

Our goal is simple your servicing should fit around your life, not the other way round.

Regular servicing significantly reduces the risk of unexpected issues but no garage can guarantee that nothing will ever go wrong.

Modern vehicles are complex machines with thousands of moving and electronic components.  What servicing does is dramatically lower the chances of preventable problems by identifying wear, faults, or developing issues early.

By following the manufacturer’s service schedule and using specialist diagnostics, we can spot potential concerns before they turn into costly breakdowns. That’s where most of the long term savings and peace of mind come from.

Think of servicing as protection not just maintenance.

Yes, absolutely.

We have a comfortable reception area where you’re welcome to wait while shorter services are completed.  There is seating, refreshments and Wi-Fi available, so you can catch up on emails or take calls if needed.

Many of our clients choose to work while they wait, and we aim to make the experience relaxed and professional rather than rushed or disruptive.

If your service is likely to take longer, we’re always happy to discuss courtesy vehicle options so your day stays on track.

We offer OEM and aftermarket parts.  We strive to provide the best possible service, and that includes offering inclusive warranties on both parts and labour.  Unfortunately, this means we can’t install customer-provided parts due to insurance stipulations.  However, we’ll still try and help!  Our expert team can discuss a wide range of parts, including original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and high-quality aftermarket options, to find the perfect fit for your vehicle during your service appointment. Additionally, if you have a decorative item like a spoiler or grille that doesn’t impact safety, we’d be happy to assist with the installation!

Your safety is always our top concern!  The MOT test is a vital check to ensure your car meets industry set roadworthy standards.  While we understand life can get busy, there’s unfortunately no grace period for expired MOTs.  Driving without a valid certificate could result in fines and potentially impact your car insurance.  You can book your MOT early if it helps, if you do this within 30 days of your current expiry and the vehicle passes, then the ‘original’ expiry date will be preserved for you.  If it fails.. then sadly it’s a fail whichever way you look at it and the vehicle must be repaired before a new MOT certificate can be issued.

Built to Manufacturer Standards

So your warranty stays protected.

Warranty & Parts FAQ's

Will using an independant garage void my manufacturer warranty?

No using a qualified independent garage does not void your manufacturer warranty.

As long as your vehicle is serviced in line with the manufacturer’s schedule, using the correct parts and approved procedures, your warranty remains fully valid.  You are not required to use a main dealer.

At Bartlett Automotive, we follow manufacturer specifications, use genuine or OEM equivalent parts and carry out servicing to the same standards expected by the vehicle manufacturer.  That means your warranty stays protected without the dealership markup.

If you ever have questions about your specific warranty terms, we’re happy to explain how it applies to your vehicle.

Please see our in depth blog here: Understanding Your Vehicle Warranty

Keeping your car running smoothly means using the right parts.  We offer both original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and high quality aftermarket options to fit your needs and budget.  Just let us know your preference during your service discussion.  One thing’s for sure: safety is our top priority.  All parts we use meet the strictest standards.  In some cases, aftermarket parts can even outperform the originals!  We’ll be happy to discuss the specific options available for your vehicle to ensure a perfect fit and optimal performance.

Premium brands can have higher parts costs compared to mass market vehicles, simply because they’re built to higher engineering standards and often use more advanced components.

However, that doesn’t automatically mean every repair is expensive.

Many routine service items such as filters, brake components and fluids are often comparable in price to other quality vehicles.  Where specialist or performance components are involved, costs can be higher, but we’ll always explain this clearly before any work begins.

We only use genuine or OEM equivalent parts from trusted suppliers, ensuring your vehicle maintains its performance, safety and long term value.

Most importantly, you’ll always receive a transparent quote in advance, so you know exactly what to expect.

Quality Without the Dealership Markup

Manufacturer compliant servicing, priced fairly.

Pricing & Value FAQ's

How much will my service cost compared to a main dealer?

In most cases, our pricing is more competitive than a main dealer, while delivering the same level of technical expertise and manufacturer compliant servicing.

Because we’re independent and specialist focused, we’re able to keep our costs sensible without cutting corners.  You still benefit from dealer trained technicians, genuine or OEM parts and warranty safe servicing, just without the dealership markup.

We can provide a clear quote before any work is carried out, so you stay fully informed and in control.

We’re independent specialists, not a large dealership group.

Main dealers often carry significant overheads large showrooms, national marketing budgets and corporate structures and those costs are reflected in their pricing.

Our focus is different.  We invest in the areas that matter most: brand trained technicians, manufacturer level diagnostics and genuine or OEM equivalent parts.  By keeping our operation efficient and specialist led, we’re able to deliver the same technical standard without the dealership markup.

You’re paying for expertise and quality workmanship not corporate overhead.

Yes.  Before any work begins, we’ll provide a clear, itemised quote so you know exactly what’s involved and what it will cost.  If additional issues are identified during the service, we’ll contact you first, explain the situation in plain language and only proceed with your approval.

No hidden costs.  No unexpected add-ons.  No pressure.

You stay fully informed and in control from start to finish.

Beyond the Fault Code

True diagnostics means finding the cause, not just clearing the warning.

Diagnostics Explained FAQ's

Is diagnostics just plugging in a computer?

No that’s only the starting point.

Plugging in diagnostic equipment simply retrieves fault codes.  Those codes indicate where to begin investigating, but they don’t automatically tell you what part needs replacing.

Proper diagnostics involves analysing live data, testing components, checking wiring and connections and understanding how different vehicle systems interact.  Modern BMW, MINI, Mercedes and Porsche vehicles are highly complex and accurate diagnosis requires manufacturer level software and brand specific experience and expertise.

We focus on identifying the root cause of a problem not just clearing a warning light or replacing parts unnecessarily.

That’s the difference between reading a code and truly diagnosing a vehicle.

It depends on the type of warning light.

Some dashboard warnings relate to minor issues and the vehicle may still drive normally for a short period.  However, others particularly red or flashing lights can indicate a more serious problem that requires immediate attention.

As a general guide:

Red warning lights usually mean stop the vehicle safely and seek advice.
Amber or yellow lights often indicate a fault that should be checked soon, even if the car still feels normal.
Flashing lights may suggest an urgent issue that could cause further damage if ignored.

Modern vehicles are designed to alert you early and continuing to drive with certain faults can increase repair costs or risk additional damage.

If you’re unsure, the safest approach is to contact us.  We’re happy to advise over the phone and let you know whether it’s safe to continue driving or whether the vehicle should be inspected straight away.

Please visit our blog post for further information: Warning Lights Guide For Drivers

The time required depends on the type and complexity of the issue.

In many cases, an initial diagnostic assessment can be completed within a couple of hours.  However, more complex faults particularly intermittent electrical or engine related issues may require additional investigation.

Diagnostics is a structured process.  We begin with manufacturer level scanning, then analyse live data, carry out physical testing where needed and interpret the results using brand specific knowledge to identify the root cause.

We charge a clear diagnostic fee, which we’ll confirm with you in advance.  If further investigation is required beyond the initial assessment, we’ll always explain this and agree the next steps with you before proceeding.

Our goal is simple accurate diagnosis first, so repairs are carried out correctly and efficiently, without unnecessary parts or guesswork.

Yes, you’re welcome to wait during the initial diagnostic assessment if you’d prefer.

Many first stage diagnostics can be completed within around an hour and we have a comfortable reception area with Wi-Fi and refreshments available while you wait.

However, some faults require more in-depth investigation, which may take longer than expected particularly intermittent or complex electrical issues.  If that’s the case, we’ll always explain the situation clearly and discuss the best next steps with you.

Our aim is to diagnose the issue properly not rush the process so you can be confident the problem is identified accurately.

Flexible booking and honest time estimates.

Timing & Bookings FAQ's

How quickly can you book my vehicle in?

Appointment availability varies depending on the type of work required and the time of year.

For routine servicing and MOTs, we can often offer appointments within a few working days or sometimes on the day.  More complex work, such as diagnostics or engine repairs, may require slightly more planning to ensure the right technician and equipment are allocated.

If your vehicle has an urgent issue, let us know when you contact us and we’ll always do our best to prioritise you where possible.

The quickest way to check availability is to call us directly.  We’ll confirm a suitable date and keep everything clear from the outset.

An MOT typically takes under 2 hours, depending on the vehicle and any findings during the inspection.

For servicing, the time required will vary depending on the type of service and your vehicle’s needs.  An interim service is often completed within a few hours, while a major service may take longer, particularly if additional checks or advisory work are required.

We’ll always give you an estimated completion time when you book in and keep you updated if anything changes.

If you’d prefer to wait, you’re welcome to use our reception area with Wi-Fi and refreshments.  Alternatively, we can arrange a courtesy vehicle to help you stay on schedule.

Yes, you’re welcome to wait with us if you prefer.

For shorter services or MOTs, many clients choose to stay on site.  We have a comfortable reception area with Wi-Fi and refreshments available so you can work or relax while we take care of your vehicle.

For longer services, particularly major servicing or work that may uncover additional advisories, it can sometimes take several hours.  In those cases, we’re happy to discuss courtesy vehicle options to help you stay on schedule.

When you book in, we’ll give you an estimated timeframe so you can decide what works best for your day.

We always aim to have your vehicle ready at the time agreed when you book in.

Before starting any work, we’ll provide a realistic timeframe based on the service or repair required.  In most cases, vehicles are completed as planned.

However, if we uncover an unexpected issue during the work or if additional parts are required we’ll contact you immediately to explain the situation and discuss the revised timing.  We never leave you guessing.

Clear communication is part of our process.  If anything changes, you’ll know about it straight away.
